The Singapore Stone
Storyteller Sheila Wee
Every school holiday period, the museums of Singapore dedicate exhibits and interactive activities to children. They want to make heritage, art, culture, and science accessible to the children. The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) gallery wanted o bring to children and families the appreciation of Singapore as 'My Fair City'. How do you educate young children about city planning? Well, it all boils down to community building. Whether it is in ancient times or modern times, whether it is Singapore or some other country, community building is the key to any kind of city planning. So, I told an adapted tale about porpoises. After that, the moms and dads, grandpas and grandmas bonded with their children to build their very own city with MARSHMALLOWS!
Singapore Land Authority wanted a storytelling session for children to commemorate the special occasion of the closure of the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station for renovations. It was nostalgic. I appreciated the arches, the stained glass paintings and the washed-up dimly-lit rooms. I used photographs taken by a well-known local photographer to tell my interactive story about the people at the railway station, a cat, a fire and friendship. It comes with a 'Kerata Api' song.
I told adapted tales of Singapore myths and legends surrounding places like Jurong and Telok Blangah.
